The 1FZ-FE Pesky Heater Hose (PHH) is a notorious legend in 80 Series Land Cruiser circles.
It's a 50mm vulcanized rubber time bomb that Mr. Toyota decieded to locate in one of the
most inconvenient, yet still accessable and servicable location on the vehicle...
Hence the name PHH.
The PHH is a critical piece of cooling system hose that can fail anywhere between 60,000 and
180,000 miles and leave you stranded due to lack of coolant wherever you may be,
from the Mall to Moab.   While visual inspection will nicely tell you how the outside of the hose
looks, failures usually happen from the inside where years of high heat engine compartment
environment and hot coolant flow takes it's toll.  Properly maintained cooling systems
will generally prolong PHH life, but if you haven't owned your Cruiser since new, there is no
telling what was put into the radiator and how often.

The scary PHH above right was on a 155K mile 1995 FZJ80. The OEM PHH is black with
cotter pin style clamp.  This hose was standard generic cheap heater hose with
generic cheap clamps.  Obviously the OEM hose was replaced at some point in
time (not documented by the Previous Owner). Concerned after seeing the condition of the
hose, I believed it still had some life in it as it was the second PHH on the vehicle.
A week after the photograph was taken, the PHH failed 180 miles from home on my
friend borrowing the Cruiser to tow a trailer.

Knowing that the PHH is a very difficult and time consuming maintenance item,
I wanted to replace it with hose and clamps that was engineered as well as the rest of the
legendary Land Cruiser and replace it with something that would last the life of the vehicle...

The 4.5 ft Gates Green Stripe II hose with Breeze Constant-Torque clamps Work Around Kit
is an almost permanent fix for the PHH Achilles heal.  The Gates Green Stripe specs far
exceed that of OEM and generic heater hose and clamp capability. They failed once, they
will fail again.  Why take the risk? For around $5-10 above what you would pay for normal
hose and clamps (not to mention the cost of your time), you have a solution that will hold
up to even the most extreme environments, last the most of the life of the vehicle and will
be delivered to your door quickly.

The Work Around kit eliminates the metal connector tube that attaches the small PHH hose
near the bottom of the block to the Heater vent at the top of the engine bay in the middle.
By bypassing this tube, you eliminate some of the Pesky installation steps if you were to
install just the small PHH as you no longer have to deal with the metal tube.  The work
around hose attaches tot he heater valve and makes a nice smooth bend around the brake
Master cylinder down to the engine block with a direct shot right onto the PHH block nipple.

Is it overkill?  Maybe for mall Cruisers.  But if you crawl
in Moab, your Birfs should be the only thing you worry about. It’s what known in the
aerospace industry as having "MARGIN".

SPECS:

-47°F to +275°F Operating Range
95 PSI Burst Strength
Gates Green Stripe Hose has heavy-duty construction assures dependable operation of
truck, bus, and off road equipment heater systems. It's approved for marine applications,
the cover is abrasion resistant.  Advanced EPDM tube, cover, and reinforcement withstand
high under-hood and coolant temperatures. Designed for extended use without cracking
or hardening. Exceeds SAE 20R1 Type EC, Standard Wall Class D-1.
Breeze Constant-Tourque Clamping System: Virtually all rubber hose compresses
"cold flow" after installation of a clamping device, resulting in an almost immediate torque loss
that can exceed 80% of installation torque. Similarly, virtually all metal connections expand as
a system heats up, and then contracts as the system cools. Conventional worm-gear, T-Bolt,
and other clamps are passive, in that expansion and contraction of components cannot be
compensated for without retightening or loosening the clamps. The Breeze clamping system
is an "active" clamp mechanism, which monitors and then compensates for the temperature
changes by actually changing diameter through a unique worm-gear Belleville assembly.

*        Quadra-lock construction - housing orbitally riveted to saddle at 4 points providing extra strength.
*        Liner protects soft or silicone hose from damage, extrusion or shear.
*        Eliminates the sometimes necessary replacement of "single use" clamps during
        routine or emergency maintenance.
*        Easily installed, easily replaced in the field.
*        Energy store in compressed Belleville springs controls automatic clamp adjustment.
*        Torque Check - permits visual assurance that the clamp is properly installed.
*        Stainless steel -- virtually unlimited product life - won't rust or corrode and is reuseable.
Gates Green Stripe PHH Work Around Kits come with
